How would you feel about earning a doctorate in financial engineering? That would be a rather direct path into the field.

Other options include:

* working contacts via professors.
* contacting recruiters who specialize in quantitative analysis.
* searching through the job listed on this site using "engineering" as your key search word. That will turn up companies looking for someone with your degree.
* if you're not qualified for those positions, make note of the companies and then do another search for everything they've posted. Check their corporate Web site, as well, to see what else is available.

At least before the summer, people with quant degrees but no finance experience were finding jobs. "One can apply what you learned in other fields directly to Wall Street," Gregg Berman, head of strategic development at RiskMetrics Group told us in May. An undergraduate education in math or a closely related subject can be directly transferable to finance, he noted. Such degrees are also seen as indicating good problem-solving ability.
