Unfortunately, neither a BS in economics nor a military strategic planning background would appeal much to the typical PE or VC firm. PE firms tend to be as pedigree-conscious as the bulge-bracket investment banks they love to cherry-pick candidates from after a few years as apprentice dealmakers. As a result, the great majority of PE hires have an MBA from a top institution; and on top of that, most have experience in either investment banking or business strategy consulting. VC firms often focus on a single industry or sector; so, solid knowledge/experience/contacts in a particular target employer's target industry (something defense-related, perhaps?) might get you in the door there.
